Add 'Eject' to Mac. (Handy for PC Keyboards or 3rd Party Mac Keyboards.)

Modified on Sun, 26 Apr 2020 at 04:19 PM

Add an Eject Item to the Menu Bar

  1. Open a Finder and navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/ Menu Extras.
  2. Double-click the Eject.menu item in the Menu Extras folder.

The Eject menu item will be added to your Mac’s menu bar. It will have the eject icon, which is a chevron with a line below it. If you click on the Eject menu item, it will display all of the CD/DVD drives attached to your Mac, and provide the option to ‘Open’ or ‘Close’ each drive, depending on its current state.

Position the Eject Menu

Like any other menu bar item, you can position the Eject menu to appear anywhere in the menu bar.

  1. Press and hold the Command key.
  2. Drag the Eject menu icon on the menu bar to the desired location within the menu bar. Once you start dragging the Eject icon, you can release the Command key.
  3. Release the mouse button when the Eject menu is where you want it to be.

Remove the Eject Menu

  1. Press and hold the Command key.
  2. Click and drag the Eject menu icon off the menu barOnce you start dragging the Eject icon, you can release the Command key.
  3. Release the mouse button when the Eject menu no longer appears in the menu bar. The Eject icon will disappear.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

This is the complete workaround on keyboards with no eject button:

1. Load the Terminal.app from the utilities folder
2. To open the disk tray, type this: drutil tray eject
3. To close the disk tray: drutil tray close
